Ep 140 – Prelude to Infinity Con

transmissions-header-10-7

This November 15th Upstate New York welcomes another pop culture convention with open arms! And this one’s got everything; comics, special guests, an indoor water park. Yeah, you read that correctly: It’s not every day you find a convention under the same roof as an indoor water park, across the street from a Six Flags amusement park, and just down the road from an outlet mall. The whole family’s gonna want to get in on this one. So take a trip to Queensbury, NY next month with the Evil Geeks.

We recently sat down with Infinity Con creator, Steve Duckett to discuss the genesis of the convention as well as what goes into getting an event like this off the ground.

Tickets can be purchased via their website or for more information you can check out The Infinity Con Facebook page.

A warning.

There are undoubtedly spoilers to be found within these writeups, but the same spoilers will be readily available to anyone with access to a comic store and $0 on this coming Saturday, Free Comic Book Day (!) .

But if you’re unsure what book should be top priority, which ones are safe for kids, or what you’d be getting yourself into, take a look at the following reviews. Free Comic Book Day can get a bit intense at the right store, and to be forewarned is to be forearmed.

Evil Geek Book Report -Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Collection Volume 1

Like most children of the 1980’s I consumed all things Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles related.  The cartoon, the toys, the video games…pretty much anything I could get my hands on except the comic books. I was just a little too young to know that there was life before the animated kids show. When I found out that IDW acquired the comic book rights to the original Mirage Studio output I knew I had to get in there and check it out.

I started with the lavish Ultimate Edition Vol. 1 hardcover containing the first seven issues of the run plus the Micro-Series #1 – Raphael (a self-contained story that fits in between issues #3 and #4). The art is blown up and printed in its original black and white state and after each issue there is a write up by creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird discussing what was going on at that point in their publishing life. Plus, there’s almost a page by page write up about the art from the issue and the layouts. It’s a hefty ticket price of $50 dollars for 8 issues, but it’s a wealth of information.

So, I Sat Through Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

tmnt2014 logo

Sometimes I wonder if the MTV series Jackass had more of an impact on me than I would like to admit. I say this not because Johnny Knoxville did the voice of Leonardo in the movie I’m about to discuss, but rather because I watched this film as a sort of lighthearted self-mutilation. Thankfully, my girfriend shares my fondness for the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon and movies as well as my  inexplicable attraction toward terrible movies. Very often, when I know a movie is going to be awful, I get just as excited about seeing it as I do when I know it will be fantastic. This is one falls into the former category, there was absolutely nothing indicating this movie would be watchable and yet we went and saw it opening night (we’re not entirely masochistic, it was a double feature at the drive-in with Guardians of the Galaxy… sort of like lukewarm piss with an ice cold lemonade chaser). And boy, oh boy… it was everything we’d thought it would be and so much less!
