A Glimpse Into Phil Noto’s Artwork

I’ve recently become fascinated by Phil Noto’s art. Not only is it strangely beautiful, but it also has a particular design atheistic that is very appealing to me. A lot of his work feels like it would be equally at home in a high end fashion magazine as well as a comic book. While his current day job sees him doing interior’s for Marvel’s Black Widow series with writer Nathan Edmonson here is a sampling of what else he’s done.

Evil Geek Book Report – Heir to the Empire

While Lilith is slowly making her way through the world of Star Trek, you know that she will forever be a Star Wars fan. Of course, the extension of that fandom involved rewatching the movies, mostly the originals, as marathons at least once a year. I probably know over 50% of the lines in episodes 4,5, and 6 by heart. And I haven’t had too much interest before now in delving in to any other Star Wars stories, though I look forward to J.J. Abrams reboot next year. That being said, my muse the Veganaut convinced me, and of course purchased me, the Timothy Zahn trilogy so that I could finally experience some extended universe stories. I will now bring you my evil geek book report for the first in the trilogy: Heir to the Empire, of course containing some spoilers.

Villain Spotlight: Boba Fett

Today’s villain spotlight is quite an icon, one that I have to admit was a little intimidating for your dear Lilith here to tackle. But it is actually that insane obsession the world seems to have with this villain that inspired me to steal this week’s villain column and discuss him. Boba Fett is a man of few words that all in all does not get a ton of screen time in the original Star Wars movie, yet he is now one of the most popular and marketed characters of the franchise. What is it about Boba Fett that is so alluring and attractive to the masses? Continue on for Lilith’s take on this bounty hunter villain…

Pulp Corner: New Star Wars Pulp Art From Timothy Anderson

I’m a big fan of Timothy Anderson’s art. He gets the genre of pulp and in many cases mixes it up with things that wouldn’t traditionally fit the bill and in doing so creates some fun and exciting work. We’ve highlighted some of his art way back when we first started but he’s introduced three new Star Wars pieces that we’d be remised to not show you. One for each of the original trilogy.

The Han Solo Frozen In Carbonite Bank

HanI saw this at a booth at NY Comic Con and I needed to have it right then in there. Who cares that it’s actually a bank? I just want to own it and have it adorn my house. Well unfortunately, they told me it wouldn’t be available till 2013. And the website Diamond Select Toys tells me it’s coming out in April, pre-order this now!!

Silver Surfer Bottle Opener

This one isn’t that great, but it’s clever. Being clever should count for something, right? The rest of the bottle opener is Silver Surfer’s board…get it? Yea, well I still want it. You can get this one at Diamond Select Toys as well.

What better way to let company know that you’re living the high life than to serve them a cocktail with a minature frozen water replica of the most powerful weapon ever created?

The Death Star silicon ice cube form, an item snatched from my own shopping list, is sure to do the trick!

-Are you a geek who happens to spend a whole lot of time in the kitchen?  Tired of getting grease stains all over your comic tees?  Then check out this sweet-ass Batman Apron:

Put an end to Gotham’s corruption and unsightly grease stains, all while looking like the baddest mothafucka in the universe.

Still don’t feel like a big enough bad-ass at your BBQ yet even though you’re sporting your caped crusader apron?  Well, there’s only one way to improve on that out fit and that’s with this awesome Swashbuckling BBQ Fork:

bbf3_swashbuckling_bbq_swordTake your grilling game to the next level by pretending that your dinner is being prepared by Captain Jack Sparrow!  Of course in order to complete the cosplay, you’ll have to consume about a half gallon of rum before you start cooking. Puffy shirt not included.

Trying to by a gift for that die-hard Star Wars fan in your life? Then think about picking up this Han Solo Ice Cube Tray:

Spice up your drinks with a little smuggler!  Be careful what booze you put in that drink though: Carbon sickness isn’t the only thing that causes blindness, so does poorly made moonshine.

Finally, this Christmas you can give a Trekkie the gift of boldly going where no Americanized Italian food has gone before with this Star Trek Enterprise Pizza Cutter:

I’m not even really into Star Trek, but even I’ll admit that this utensil is pretty cool!

Batman Cookie Jar
Who better to guard your cookies that the Caped Crusader, right? Actually there are a ton of Batman cookie jars on the market but I picked this one because it has that “Don’t touch my fucking cookies!” look on his face reminiscent of a fat kid at the lunch table! So next time you want to keep your chocolate chips safe, let the bat guard ’em!

Custom Superhero Coat Rack
This really cool home item is another custom-made creation that you can find on Etsy (I really love that place for this kind of stuff!) What we have in this piece are repurposed comic book panels of The Hulk giving a smackdown to Thor in outer space. Its really something to hang your hat on! (bad joke, I know :() The designer goes by the name Junksy and it looks like they’ve got a few different designs in their store. I bet if you contacted them that they would make a custom design for you! My only gripe about this stuff is that Comics get destroyed in the making of these items… I’d love to see a sign that read something like; “No Comics were harmed in the making of this production!” But Hell, at least it looks like a 90’s book… there are millions of those laying around to spare!

Doctor Who 11th Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver…Screwdriver
Just like the 11th Doctors’, this is one heluva multifunctional tool! You can use it to pick locks and control computers through the universe or simply tighten that loose screw under the dining room chair because this die-cast tool comes with both Philips and Flat Head screwdriver tips that you can store in a chamber in the base. So if your geeks a handyman who’s into Cosplay, then this is the best gift out there!

The Sonic Screwdriver!

Remember to come back tomorrow for The 12 Days of Geeks-Mas Day 12: General Geekery
