Cover(s) Of The Day 8/15/14

Fatale24-CoverFatale is no stranger to our Cover Of The Day segment, but in honor of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ series wrapping up we thought we’d highlight a montage put together by the good folks over at A Criminal Blog (your home for all things BRUBAKER including a comprehensive timeline for the events in Fatale). The montage below culls all 24 issues of the horror/noir comic as well as the 5 covers for the trade paperbacks. It doesn’t get much better than this folks.

July Trade Paperback Recommendations

I don’t buy a lot of new single issue comics. To me it doesn’t make any sense to go buy 1 comic for 5 individual series that I will read in 10 minutes than forget what happened by the time the next issue is released. God forbid if it’s delayed too. I prefer to buy trades if I can, that way I feel like I accomplished something when I’m through. I can also get a whole storyline at once and perhaps even an ending/closure. I might be everything that’s wrong with the modern day comic industry.

With all that said, I probably keep an eye out on Amazon for trades that are being released more than most people. The month of July has some excellent releases on the docket that I’m looking forward to and you should too.

Saga Vol. 2

Release Date: July 2

Collects Issues #7-12

Saga has been one of the most critically acclaimed and interesting new series. In Vol. 1 we are introduced to Marko and Alana, two star crossed lovers on opposite sides of a galactic war. When they bear a child it forces them to go on the run and become fugitives. The book is populated with endlessly imaginative characters and landscapes. In general terms it would be considered Sci-Fi but it’s so much more than that. It’s a story of desperation, but ultimately of hope. Vol. 1 ended with them being able to escape the planet they were stranded on and head to outer space. Shit is going to get intergalactic in Vol. 2.

Cover(s) Of The Day 5/31/13

Today’s first Cover Of The Day is fresh off the comic racks. Fatale #14 is written by Ed Brubaker and drawn immaculately by his long time collaborator, Sean Phillips. Fatale is a series that has had a lot of excellent covers to choose from but when I saw this one I fell in love with it immediately. It appeals to the Indiana Jones and pulp nerd inside me. We’re talking Nazis, the occult, a hint of film noir and a badass heroine ready to kick some serious ass in the 1940’s. What’s not to like?

Pulp Corner: Fatale Book 1 – Death Chases Me

I had never heard of Fatale or read anything by Ed Brubaker. My evil compatriot, Martian Luthor Kang advised me based on my interests to check it out. After some preliminary research I found it was basically a film noir mixed with horror. Generally not being a fan of the horror genre I was a little put off at first. It seemed like an odd combination but to make it work it would have to be the proper balance between each genre, but it can be done.
