All New, All Different Marvel Mini Reviews (Part 1)

Marvel-Comics-Reboot-2

Marvel is still in the midst of the massive company wide crossover Secret Wars. Numerous delays have pushed the ending from October 7th until December along with adding an issue (or more accurately splitting a larger issue into two). Because of this, the new relaunch of Marvel titles with the line wide branding of All New, All Different Marvel has started rolling out prior to the conclusion of the event they spawned out of. Story wise, they were smart enough to position all the new books as happening 8 months after the conclusion of Secret Wars. This allows for new readers to jump on without much of a problem and the season veterans to know there is still some mystery left to figure out how the characters got there. It’s interesting marketing, but delays in this medium drive me crazy and with such a coordinated event it becomes a clusterfuck. Secret Wars spin off series that were launched during the early days of the main title now have significant delays because of not being able to reveal things in their series until they happen in the main event book. I’m not sure how issue #5 of Where Monsters Dwell (the seemingly most tangentially connected spin off book) is relevant to say issue #7 of Secret Wars but I know I’ve had to wait a few months to find out.

All that aside, the first wave of Marvel’s All New, All Different initiative has started to be released and I’m going to take a look at a few those new series. I’m only reviewing the titles I have an interest in so keep in mind you won’t be seeing everything.

Biff’s 2013 Comics In Review

2013 was a banner year for geekology, but with our sights toward 2014 there is a lot to be excited about between all the movies (SIN CITY 2!?!), video games, tv shows and etc on the horizon, but I’d like to focus on comic books in this article. More accurately, Biff comic books.

Current Series

Superior Spider-Man (Marvel)

It’s been mentioned on the site before, but this is probably my favorite series of 2013. It’s energetic, interesting above all else refreshing. I know there’s a lot of nay sayers who refuse to read it based solely on principal, but dammit you don’t know what you’re missing out on (not to mention stubbornness is not an attractive quality) and honestly what do you have to lose? You know if you wait it out long enough the real Peter Parker will return. Just think of this series as a long interlude. Why not stick around for the ride?

Slott is my favorite kind of writer, it’s obvious that he’s planned story lines for years in advance and has the ability to subtly weave subplots through them that you always know are going to pay off. You don’t stay on a book as its author for that long if there isn’t something to it. With a book consistently being this good and being put out twice a month is heavenly.  Things are heating up in 2014 with the beginning of the Goblin Nation story line that’s been building since the book debuted with some speculation that the series will wrap you shortly afterward. It’s been an exciting year for Spidey but 2014 seems to be starting off strong as well.

Evil Geek Book Report – Superior Spider-Man #1

Everyone hold still… he lost a contact.

A few weeks back, Marvel made headlines (although not as many as these events have in the past) when they more or less killed off everyone’s favorite webhead in Amazing Spider-Man 700.  Some of the world’s finest minds (and one of its sexiest) have discussed this at length. This week we enter a new era in the saga of your friendly neighborhood webslinger as Peter Parker jumps into action as the Superior Spider-Man.  Now, if you’re not familiar with the new status quo of the book, I’ll give a brief recap:  A rapidly deteriorating Doctor Octopus, hours from dying, pulled a Freaky Friday on Spider-Man. Doc Ock had Spidey’s body, along with all of his memories up until that point and vice versa. Now,  Spider-Man was not able to reverse the swap in time, and as he lay dying in the good doctor’s withered husk, he forced Doc to remember the many events that made Peter the noble hero he is today. Doctor Octopus, in a surprising turn, decided that he would pick up where Spider-Man left off , using his remarkable intellect and new found lust for life to be a better hero than his former nemesis ever was.

Ep 002 – The Amazing Spider-Cast!

What better way to close out 2012 than with a brand spankin’ new episode of The Brotherhood of Evil Geeks Podcast!  Last night we gathered around the big table in the main hall of the Evil Lair with some special guests to discuss the controversial Amazing Spider-Man #700 by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos.  We discuss the the events of the issue, where we think Slott will take Spidey next and get disturbed by visions of Aunt May and Otto Octavius’ senior citizen sex-life.  So kick back, relax and say good bye to 2012…and apparently to Peter Parker.

You can check out the episode here:

Here’s a few pics that we reference in the podcast –

This is the pic that Biff dubbed the worst panel ever (C-Mart disagrees!):
