Guilty Pleasures – The Wizard

tumblr_mf6jz0ciTa1rlfvf9o1_500

There were two things I loved in 1989, Nintendo and the Wonder Years. The movie The Wizard gave me the bizarre opportunity to combine both of them. My mom took my brother and I to the movies to let us experience this first hand. We left that theatre elated. I hadn’t seen the movie in the following 26 years until last weekend. I’ll proudly admit (if you couldn’t guess based on the title of this article), I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it still.

Now make no bones about it, this is not a good movie in a way shape or form. Sometimes though you can coast through something solely on nostalgia despite how bad it is. Other times though nostalgia just isn’t enough.

Pulp Corner: Captain America, The Steranko Run

Jim_Steranko_Captain_America__111_cover

Legendary artist Jim Steranko did 3 issues of Captain America in 1969 directly coming off his groundbreaking run on Nick Fury. I’ve been waiting a long time to read this, it may only be 3 issues but there’s criminally little comic book output from Steranko and it’s worth pouring over. Stan Lee is on scripts here and the storylines are in step with his silver age zaniness but when the art is this good it doesn’t matter.

So what was I in for?

What’s Killing My Social Life This Week – Dungeon of the Endless

Are you tired of these games that… fuck it, I’m not doing an introductory paragraph this time.

Dungeon of the Endless (not to be confused with, Legend of the Dungeon, Dungeonland or I-have-no-creativity-when-it-comes-to-naming-my-game) is, according to that Face Recognition app, a 48-year-old squirrel with one gammy eye and an eating disorder. The story is similar to Risk of Rain’s in almost every way; you are a person/s on a prison ship heading towards a place of unknown place-ness, when suddenly you crash down on an alien planet due to the actions of a particularly aggressive plot-device. Finding yourself in what’s presumably a mutant-infested, underground research lab, you have to use your wit, strength and charisma to escape in as few pieces as possible. The game itself is a weird hybrid of TDs, Dungeon crawlers, RPGs and resource-management games with a few rogue like elements sprinkled on top. Oh and also it has a Tutu. Did I mention the tutu? Twice now, you reply.

Pulp Corner: Men’s Adventure Magazine Covers

I’ve been the Evil Geeks curator for all things pulp. It’s a genre that I find unwaveringly fascinating. I think what I like the most about it is the adventure element of that era. Jim Steranko’s Raiders Of The Lost Ark concept art sums up visually what it is about it that makes me love it so much. When I first stumbled upon the men’s adventure magazines of the 1950’s and 60’s it was like finding a time capsule full of everything that made the genre great.

The magazine covers are full of absurd art with many reoccurring themes. Rugged men battling animals, scantily clad women captured and ready to be sacrificed deep in the jungle, nazi mad men torturing anyone that can get their hands on, aloof cowboys, war scenes etc. It’s all a bit gonzo in the best possible way. The headlines and the titles of the magazines are another thing you can marvel at. Many of these publications are incredibly sexist and obviously targeted for the men of the era so you certainly have to take it all with a grain of salt.

It has since become a bit of a hobby for me to track down these covers. I just find them endlessly entertaining and the amount that exist is staggering. So strap yourself in and get ready to go back in time as I share some of my favorites with you.
