S.H.I.E.L.D.S. Up: Shadows

Hey True Believers

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is back and that means that Big Evil and C-Mart are back too…the last time we saw Coulson and company they were wrapping up the whole Deathlok debacle, HYDRA was outed as a splinter cell within the organization, and Nick Fury himself went into hiding and left Phil Coulson in charge as the new Director. So can Coulson and company keep the ship afloat? Read on to find out…

So Coulson is the big man in charge now and if all over trying to recruit for the struggling S.H.I.E.L.D. while the US Military is hunting them thanks to General Talbot and HYDRA is quietly rebuilding their operations around the world. The team has expanded with some new members including Izzy Hartley (Lucy Lawless,) Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) and Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie (Henry Simmons) and we drop right into an op involving an ex agent looking to sell information on a box with an 084 label on it…for those without their notes, an 084 is S.H.I.E.L.D.’s way of identifying an unknown object. The 084 in question is an item known as the Obelisk that was seized from a post-Red Skull HYDRA in a fun flashback to 1945 with Agent Carter and the Howling Commandos and gives me high hopes for that new series.

The op is interupted when a bulletproof man busts in and steals the file. They unload a ton of clips in him, but the big man stands and snaps the neck of the ex agent and runs off…immediately it feels like the old Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. formula again. A spy-like mission is going down, the team is caught off guard, a new bad guy is presented and the team has to chase them…Sounds like it could be boring, but it’s really quite awesome. Instead of giving you the play by play this week, I’d rather you watch it and just want to give you some updates as to where we are now.

Phil Coulson
Once the right hand man to Nick Fury and then seemingly a Maverick, Phil is now the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Nice upgrade right? Well it’s all title. After the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier we find out that HYDRA has really been infiltrating the peace-keeping institution. With that said, the US Military is really looking at anyone in S.H.I.E.L.D. (good or bad) as an unfriendly, and are tracking them down, which makes building the organization back to it’s past status very difficult. Coulson seems to have a government nemesis in the form of General Talbot (yup, he got an upgrade) who reminds me of a maniacal General Thunderbolt Ross to be honest, with the inability to see HYDRA for what they really are and S.H.I.E.L.D. as the guys who are gonna stop them. Phil’s gonna have to lead his team in a real old school manner without all the toys and tech that Fury had…but he does have Agent Bill Koenig (Patton Oswalt) to lean on at least!

Welcome to the position of Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Phil Coulson, Hope you Survive!

Skye & May

Skye has become badass. She was without a doubt the focus on the first season next to Coulson and she was training to become an agent. She seems a little more cold and less inviting than in the first episode, but she’s had it rough- shot, brought back to life, and then finding out she’s an 084 herself. But, in this first episode she seems legit and possibly because of the help from her new mentor; Melinda May. May is still concerned about Coulson, as we found out both he and Skye have alien blood in their veins (maybe Kree, but still hard to tell in my opinion…all we know is that it was blue.) Anyway, Melinda is still keeping her eye on Phil and looking for any side effects. It’s good to see the Skye/Maye relationship form because those two had a rocky relationship in the past, but they work so much better as a team. Luckily for them, they don’t have Ward around to mind-fuck them…or do they?

Grant Ward

Remember him? Golden Boy turned to sociopath in the last five episodes, yeah that guy. He spent the first season playing everyone to weed his way into the team and gain their trust and then almost took them out from the inside. He became crazy over Skye and fell for her, but ya know it’s that stalker kind of love. Last time we saw Ward he was being carted off to jail, but instead of the Raft Coulson decided to throw him in the basement in a makeshift dungeon since he has a lot of info on HYDRA. Unfortunately for her, the bearded and suicidal Ward will only give the information to Skye, so we’ll have to watch this once unfold. I’m gonna call it right now, he’s gonna save her life somehow and they’re gonna put him on a leash of sorts, like a Suicide Squad member.

Yeah, Antoine Triplett is back and with the good guys. Trip is still growing on me, but he’s the teams field muscle for now. I’m excited to see what happens with him, but what happened to his relationship with Simmons?

These guys are great, the heart of the show in my opinion, so when it looked like the end for Leopold Fitz last season I was a little pissed. Well he’s back! which is good news, but he’s broken. He isn’t the genius he used to be, struggling with pretty much everything. Luckily he has Gemma Simmons to back him up and help him out…or does he? Just watch the show and get ready to be heart broken in the last 10 minutes.

New Team

As I mentioned before, the premeire had Izzy Hartley (Lucy Lawless,) Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) and Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie in it and we’ve been promised more agents including Adrianne Palicki as Mockingbird. Coulson took a quick look at a map of Agents around the globe and I have a feeling that we’re gonna see an agent of the week type of thing and they’ll all get together to fight Hydra at the end to lead into Avengers 2.

I was hoping for HYDRA from day 1 of this series because it’s the ying to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s yang. They seem to have the upper hand and are already using some notable Marvel villains. The premiere showed off Carl “Crusher” Creel known simply in the comics as The Absorbing Man, who in my opinion was somewhat of a lame villain, but worked out well on screen. I hope that they find more like him to put a thorn in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s side rather than the Deathlok scenario from last year. Hear that Marvel? Bring on the Bad Guys!!! And just like Creel, don’t worry about over-explaining them!

OK True believers, that’s all I got. Get out there and watch this show because I’m telling you, it’ll be the glue to holds the movies together. The details that all of us fans want to see that can’t fit into a 2 hr movie.

Later Nerds!
