Brovember 27 – Fezzik and Inigo

Most people think of romance when they think of The Princess Bride, being that it is such a timeless love story. However, I find myself enjoying the bromance more than the relationship between Buttercup and Westley. The bromance of course being between two of the best characters of the story: Fezzik and Inigo Montoya.

These two wind up together as they are both short on luck and in need of money, so they find themselves employed by the scoundrel Vizzini, performing a plot to capture and murder the Princess Buttercup to set two bordering countries to war. And while this pair may seem like an odd couple, they become fast friends.

Anybody want a peanut?

It’s like an instant understanding between the two, leading to jokes and a general fond affection for one another. Both misfits with a compassionate center, it’s like these two were meant to be together.

Sadly they get separated as The Dread Pirate Roberts knocks both of them out. But as a testament to their love for one another, Fezzik the hapless giant finds poor Inigo, who has once again fallen off the band wagon and ended up drunk and lost in a slum. Luckily friendship is an important value for Fezzik, and he takes it on to himself to rescue Inigo from himself so that he can once again pursue his mission to avenge his father.

And once again we get to accompany this adventurous duo as they rescue Westley and try to thwart Humperdink from successfully marrying and then murdering his fiancé Buttercup. Inigo might seem like the brains of the duo, but thank goodness for Fezzik’s foresight to bring along a holocaust cloak! Eventually their quest enables Inigo to inflict the revenge he oh so desired, and Fezzik is waiting in the wings to rescue his friends.

Now I know the ending scene of the movie features Buttecup and Westley’s most epic kiss, but I must say that I like to believe Fezzik and Inigo get to ride off in to the sunset as well, hopefully enjoying many future years of bromantic love and epic adventures.

Stay tuned folks, for today I will bring you another stunning column featuring The Princess Bride.
