Brovember 22 – Han Solo and Chewbacca
I am a little miffed that no one has chosen to talk about this epic bromance, but hey, that leaves it for your favorite female infiltrating the brotherhood. I guess we already spotlighted Harrison Ford in a different bromance, but I think we all wish we had a friendship as tight as Han and Chewie. These two get to ride around in the coolest piece of junk this side of the galaxy having a blast smuggling things behind the Empire’s back. Sounds a little Firefly doesn’t it? Well, obviously, Firefly stole this incredible idea and combination, since Star Wars is as classic as you come.
I think we all remember the first time we laid eyes on this duo, sipping down some drinks at a bar in Mos Eisley, hoping for some good, honest dirty work. But I dug a little further in to their relationship as I wanted to see where they first met. We all had a brief glimpse in to Chewie’s past, since we saw him assisting Yoda during the Clone Wars.
Well it turns out Han was not always a scruffy looking nerf-herder. In fact, he was enrolled at the Imperial Academy, but was kicked out when he forcibly stopped an Imperial officer from beating a wookie with a whip for resisting capture. Said wookie, our good old friend Chewie, swore a life debt to Han. From then on these two accompanied each other everywhere.
From there the stories not told in the movies go on and on, with adventure followed by misadventures followed by more bonding between the two. But sticking with the movies I am mostly familiar with, these two would die for one another in a heartbeat, and even though we can’t quite understand what Chewie is saying, we get the picture from the married couple style banter between the two. And thankfully for all of us no stormtrooper from here to kingdom come has any aim, so between Han’s hand blaster and Chewie’s crossbow they can’t be stopped in the heat of battle.
You also might think that Chewie’s animalistic nature might lead to him being the brute in this bromance, but it is actually the contrary. Sometimes Han gets so worked up in being a scoundrel he needs Chewie to set him straight with some grunts and groans of wisdom.
I still think one of my favorite scenes in all the movies is from Return of the Jedi, when Han is thrown, blind, and weak, in to a holding cell only to be reunited with his best friend. Chewie is so overcome with joy that his companion is ok, and they have a heartfelt moment getting Han up to speed on everything. But clearly these two were meant to be at each other’s side forever, a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away….
