Brovember Day 2 – Black Tom Cassidy and the Juggernaut
Continuing our spotlight on the most iconic bromances in popular culture, today we highlight the special relationship between one of the X-Men’s greatest foes and one of their least culturally sensitive nuisances:
Juggernaut and Black Tom Cassidy
Yes, the devastating combination of an unstoppable force of sheer brute strength and an unashamed stereotype of all things Irish. While the Juggernaut had been appearing in the pages of the X-Men since issue #12 way back in 1965, Black Tom Cassidy didn’t appear until after the All-New, All-Different team had premiered in Giant-Size X-Men #1. Among the new recruits to the X-Men was Sean “Banshee” Cassidy, himself a laughably ill-informed Irish stereotype. Shortly after the new team returned from their first foray into space, Banshee was summoned back to the old country to collect his inheritance: The family castle. However, things are not as they seem, and when the X-Men arrive to investigate Banshee’s birthright they are ambushed by Sean’s bitter cousin and erstwhile romantic adversary Black Tom Cassidy. And he’s brought his friend The Juggernaut.
So, while the threat of a bitter rival Irishman who couldn’t be bothered to stand up while delivering threats may not have scared the X-Men, surely the added bonus of an infinitely strong hulk with a personal grudge against their founder should do the trick. As you might expect, the Juggernaut makes fairly short work of the X-Men, and were it not for the timely intervention of a pack of Leprechauns living within the walls of Cassidy Keep (I’m not even goddamn joking) the Strangest Super-Heroes of All would have been down for the count. But as always, they got back on their feet and took down this gruestome twosome? How, you may ask, did they stop the unstoppable Juggernaut? Banshee kicked Juggy’s BFF off of a ledge and Juggernaut instinctively left after him. Because that’s what bros do, bro!
Through thick and thin, Tom Cassidy and Cain Marko have stuck with one another, and that’s the name of the game. When Spider-Man encases your pal in concrete, you don’t leave him hanging. If your best friend gets turned into a sentient tree, you don’t bail on him. Just because your boy is relentless barreling through the fabric of the multiverse itself you’re not gonna just pull up stakes on the relationship. That’s what friendship is all about, and that’s why Juggernaut and Black Tom made the list.
