Brovember Day 1 – Wolverine and Nightcrawler
Hey, remember last year when we spent the month of November paying tribute to the greatest beards in popular culture and called it Novembeard? Remember how much you loved it? Well, all of your dreams are coming true today, buckaroos! We’ve got another month-long feature spotlighting the most famous Bromances in this culture of ours! Clearly you’re very excited, so let’s get right to it…
Nothing says Bro-ing Out like sharing a couple of ice cold brewskis in the woods of Westchester County, man. And that’s why today’s Brovember spotlight shines on the classic Claremont combo of Kurt Wagner and Wolverine.
Classic X-Men #4 featured a backup story, taking place early in the history of the All-New, All-Different X-Men, wherein Wolverine and Nightcrawler (with the aid of an image inducer) went out for a drink. Logan dared Nightcrawler to expose his true form to the unsuspecting patrons, and Nightcrawler accepted. It was a key point in Kurt’s development as a character and in the budding friendship of these two teammates.
Over the years, they’ve shared quite a few alcohol-fueled adventures and a great many heart-to-heart conversations. Also, quite a bit of slash fiction, but I doubt it’s in continuity. Through thick and thing, for better or for worse, Wolverine and Nightcrawler have been the best of buds. And it really does seem to revolve very closely upon drinking.
Seriously, they may be enabling one another…
And in more recent years, when Nightcrawler died fighting Bastion in the Second Coming event, Jason Aaron wrote a pretty touching story in Wolverine: Weapon X in which Logan fulfills Nightcrawlers last request, per his will. When Wolverine gets choked up over a death, it really says something. I mean, you have to figure this guy straight up murders six, seven people a week, right? He’s an unhinged killing machine and this fuzzy little elf meant the world to him.
Thankfully, though, Wolverine and Nightcrawler are both comic characters, and with all such characters (and most notably X-Men), death is a state from which one can “get better”. And this very month, Marvel launches a new title caled “Amazing X-Men” in which the Wolverine-led team of adventurers set a course for the afterlife to save the soul of Nightcrawler! So, now more than ever the friendship between these two merry mutants is worth mention.
Don’t Forget The beer.
