Let the revolution begin!
Fire is catching! In case you missed it (which is completely understandable since it premiered on MTV’s Movie Awards last night) the first trailer for the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, is officially out! What are you waiting for? Go, click, now!
Phew! Talk about exciting! There’s a lot going on in this trailer, but don’t worry, I’m here to break it down for you. Be warned, there is some book talk below the cut, as well as speculation on the movie itself. But if you haven’t read the books by now…we can’t be friends anymore.
The first thing I noticed (besides the superb casting of Philip Seymour Hoffman, but we’ll get to that later), is that this trailer is playing things pretty close to the chest. And no, I don’t mean Jennifer Lawrence’s chest. I was looking forward to a peek of the awesome Quarter Quell arena—I personally don’t have a favorite of the books, but Catching Fire is, in one geek’s opinion, the coolest and the one I read the quickest. I had to remind myself of the trailer for the first Hunger Games movie, which showed barely any of the arena at all. I can see the appeal in trying to hide some of the surprise for a later trailer, but I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t even get Katniss’s haunting line, “I’m going back into the arena.” I mean, there wasn’t even any Finnick.
But, disappointment aside, this was a stellar trailer. Donald Sutherland oozes power and creepiness as President Snow—his voice alone was enough to give me chills, not to mention his plot to kill a sixteen year old girl. Right there beside him was Philip Seymour Hoffman as new Head Gamemaker, Plutarch Heavensbee (yes, more weird names, for those of you non-book fans…you get used to it). As President Snow and Plutarch chuckle to themselves (they might as well be wringing their hands together and saying “Excellent…”), we see the uprising begin during Katniss and Peeta’s victory tour.
The trailer focuses on the war brewing in Panem, as a direct result of Katniss’s defiance of the Capitol at the end of the last movie. Oh, Peeta did too, that’s why he’s there. There’s so much Katniss hype that it’s hard to remember Peeta, but that’s what he gets for not being the protagonist. There’s even a quick scene of Katniss kissing Gale (love triangle alert!), before Gale is brought into the town square to be publicly whipped. I’m not sure which boy has it worse, honestly.
It ends with some nice foreshadowing of what’s to come, with Snow saying that all the past victors pose threats. If you’ve read the books, you know exactly what he means by that, and if not it’s ominous enough to create a craving for more. Would I have liked to see Finnick and Johanna and Beetee? Yes, but that would give the game away. And why give away too much too soon? Riding on the coattails of the hugely successful first installment and Jennifer Lawrence’s numerous award wins this season, Catching Fire is sure to be a blockbuster. The Evil Geeks will be keeping an eye out for new footage and trailers as it gets closer to release, but I only have one remaining question after this first peek…
Is it November yet?
