30 Days Hath Novembeard – Day 1

This month, as we do every year in my office, the menfolk have sworn off shaving for the next 30 days. Some people do this for charity, and we originally decided we were going to boycott shaving until our currently ludicrous workload died down. But, we realized that’s not very realistic so we’re not supporting any cause other than manliness.

This got me thinking about all of the fine beards that exist in the comics, films, and assorted media that we all love. So, throughout this month my esteemed colleague Mr. Biff Tannen and I will be presenting the mightiest beards in all of nerd culture in no particular order.

Today’s entry is one of my favorite villains ever, Hans Gruber from the film Die Hard.

Hans, bubby... I'm your white knight!

Everyone’s favorite capitalist terrorist, Hans was the antagonist of the film Die Hard. He and his gang of hunky European terrorist/jean models seized control of Nakatomi Tower in a supposed act of terrorism that turned out to be an elaborate cover for a robbery. If I just ruined the plot of Die Hard for you, I apologize… but you really should have seen it by now. Seek me out at a bar during the month of December and listen on as I drunkenly nominate Die Hard as the finest Christmas movie of all time to a table full of disinterested strangers.

That's Gary Cooper, Asshole

And when Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer.

Hans Gruber is a classic villain in my eyes because he was a monster, but he had depth. He was not a stereotypical action movie villain like those that would follow in the countless Die Hard ripoffs of the 90s, he was a gentleman. He had class and taste, which made it all the more shocking when he showed how ruthless he really was.

Check back in everyday this month as we bring you 30 of the greatest beards geekdom has to offer.
