Reusing X-Men Taglines
Last night as I was pouring over my comic collection, I noticed something peculiar. As a youth, the only title that interested me was X-Men. I’m sure the early 90’s cartoon played a huge role in that. I was sifting through some of the older issues of the Uncanny title and my eyes stopped on two (seemingly) unrelated issues. The first was issue # 139 from 1980 which is the second issue after Kitty Pryde joined the team. The second was issue # 171 where former villain, Rogue joins the X-Men. They both share the exact same tagline on each issue.
I’ll be the first to tell you that I am an unapologetic lover of Chris Claremont’s run on this series. What he elevated it to is really something to behold. So what’s the deal? Is this cover tagline just lazy writing? Did he not realize he used the exact same phrasing a few years prior? (Does the writer have say over what text goes onto the cover or is this editorial work?) Is this some kind of joke that I’m not in on?

It was also used on the cover of X-men 219 (the first one I bought in the 1980s):http://marvel.wikia.com/Uncanny_X-Men_Vol_1_219 I don’t think it’s lazy at all. It’s just a cool way to link things together and give the book its own identity.
