Comics are expensive. Trade paperbacks while sometimes can you give more bang for your buck than buying the individual issues outright can also be very expensive. Marvel’s big project a few years ago was to release the Essentials; budget line black and white trades the size of phone books. Now they’ve moved on to the Epic Collection, claiming to trade entire series’ but highlighting some of their previously uncollected issues. This (as long as it’s seen through all the way) is a great idea. Many of the more famous titles did start with a volume of their respective series inaugural issues. I bitched about their treatment of Claremont’s X-Men run but since then they have released information that they will be releasing a pivotal Epic Collection volume that covers a desirable non traded run of issues so that’s a step in the right direction. We are here today though to discuss Silver Surfer’s first volume of the Epic Collection.
2013 was a banner year for geekology, but with our sights toward 2014 there is a lot to be excited about between all the movies (SIN CITY 2!?!), video games, tv shows and etc on the horizon, but I’d like to focus on comic books in this article. More accurately, Biff comic books.
Superior Spider-Man (Marvel)
It’s been mentioned on the site before, but this is probably my favorite series of 2013. It’s energetic, interesting above all else refreshing. I know there’s a lot of nay sayers who refuse to read it based solely on principal, but dammit you don’t know what you’re missing out on (not to mention stubbornness is not an attractive quality) and honestly what do you have to lose? You know if you wait it out long enough the real Peter Parker will return. Just think of this series as a long interlude. Why not stick around for the ride?
Slott is my favorite kind of writer, it’s obvious that he’s planned story lines for years in advance and has the ability to subtly weave subplots through them that you always know are going to pay off. You don’t stay on a book as its author for that long if there isn’t something to it. With a book consistently being this good and being put out twice a month is heavenly. Things are heating up in 2014 with the beginning of the Goblin Nation story line that’s been building since the book debuted with some speculation that the series will wrap you shortly afterward. It’s been an exciting year for Spidey but 2014 seems to be starting off strong as well.
Alex Maleev very well might be one of my favorite comic book artists in the medium today. He’s magnificently talented, but I stumbled upon some of his water color paintings that showcase another dimension of his work. If your lucky enough to see him at a convention he often sells these one of a kind creations and does commissions. So check it out and get yourself a healthy dose of some serious nerd art today.
I’ve always wanted to read The Infinity Gauntlet. Especially, since we know Thanos will be the villain in the Avengers 2. It was high time for me to get caught up. This trade paperback more or less sets the table and works as a prelude to the Infinity Gauntlet.

The Han Solo Frozen In Carbonite Bank
I saw this at a booth at NY Comic Con and I needed to have it right then in there. Who cares that it’s actually a bank? I just want to own it and have it adorn my house. Well unfortunately, they told me it wouldn’t be available till 2013. And the website Diamond Select Toys tells me it’s coming out in April, pre-order this now!!
Silver Surfer Bottle Opener
This one isn’t that great, but it’s clever. Being clever should count for something, right? The rest of the bottle opener is Silver Surfer’s board…get it? Yea, well I still want it. You can get this one at Diamond Select Toys as well.
MARTIAN LUTHOR KANG THE 117th
What better way to let company know that you’re living the high life than to serve them a cocktail with a minature frozen water replica of the most powerful weapon ever created?
The Death Star silicon ice cube form, an item snatched from my own shopping list, is sure to do the trick!
-Are you a geek who happens to spend a whole lot of time in the kitchen? Tired of getting grease stains all over your comic tees? Then check out this sweet-ass Batman Apron:
Put an end to Gotham’s corruption and unsightly grease stains, all while looking like the baddest mothafucka in the universe.
Still don’t feel like a big enough bad-ass at your BBQ yet even though you’re sporting your caped crusader apron? Well, there’s only one way to improve on that out fit and that’s with this awesome Swashbuckling BBQ Fork:
Take your grilling game to the next level by pretending that your dinner is being prepared by Captain Jack Sparrow! Of course in order to complete the cosplay, you’ll have to consume about a half gallon of rum before you start cooking. Puffy shirt not included.
Trying to by a gift for that die-hard Star Wars fan in your life? Then think about picking up this Han Solo Ice Cube Tray:
Spice up your drinks with a little smuggler! Be careful what booze you put in that drink though: Carbon sickness isn’t the only thing that causes blindness, so does poorly made moonshine.
Finally, this Christmas you can give a Trekkie the gift of boldly going where no Americanized Italian food has gone before with this Star Trek Enterprise Pizza Cutter:
I’m not even really into Star Trek, but even I’ll admit that this utensil is pretty cool!
Batman Cookie Jar
Who better to guard your cookies that the Caped Crusader, right? Actually there are a ton of Batman cookie jars on the market but I picked this one because it has that “Don’t touch my fucking cookies!” look on his face reminiscent of a fat kid at the lunch table! So next time you want to keep your chocolate chips safe, let the bat guard ’em!
Custom Superhero Coat Rack
This really cool home item is another custom-made creation that you can find on Etsy (I really love that place for this kind of stuff!) What we have in this piece are repurposed comic book panels of The Hulk giving a smackdown to Thor in outer space. Its really something to hang your hat on! (bad joke, I know :() The designer goes by the name Junksy and it looks like they’ve got a few different designs in their store. I bet if you contacted them that they would make a custom design for you! My only gripe about this stuff is that Comics get destroyed in the making of these items… I’d love to see a sign that read something like; “No Comics were harmed in the making of this production!” But Hell, at least it looks like a 90’s book… there are millions of those laying around to spare!
Doctor Who 11th Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver…Screwdriver
Just like the 11th Doctors’, this is one heluva multifunctional tool! You can use it to pick locks and control computers through the universe or simply tighten that loose screw under the dining room chair because this die-cast tool comes with both Philips and Flat Head screwdriver tips that you can store in a chamber in the base. So if your geeks a handyman who’s into Cosplay, then this is the best gift out there!
Remember to come back tomorrow for The 12 Days of Geeks-Mas Day 12: General Geekery
